Ripped from today's headlines, Grey Matters will take you a pulsing tour of the inside world of modern medicine. This explosive first novel from Dr. Mark Foster will grab your heart on the first page, not letting it go until the final boat-rocking climax. Dr. Joseph Rorke is an overworked medical resident putting in long hours at his Colorado hospital. Kaitlyn Sullivan is a vibrant obstetrical nurse. They are each struggling with ethical dilemmas in their young careers when a mysterious mutual dream brings them together. Kaitlyn believes; Joe is skeptical. But the power of the dream overwhelms them, propelling them swiftly towards marriage and pregnancy. Then for Kaitlyn, the dreams abruptly stop. For Joe, they continue, but transform into a series of ominous nightmares that warn ofgrave danger for Kaitlyn and their unborn child. Joe's heroic instincts clash with his worst impulses of controlling behavior. His scientific mind battles against his subverted faith as he fights to protect his young family against intangible doom. Grey Matters is an insider's take on the complex world of modern health care. It delves into the gray areas that abound in medical ethics what are the limits of modern medicine? Can saving a life conflict with "Do No Harm"? How do we judge quality of life for those unable to speak for themselves? But first and foremost, Grey Matters is a love story, the tale of two modern medical martyrs whose dreary lives are set ablaze by a dream that is both irresistible and foreboding. Their romance poses questions about the gray areas we all face in relationships how do we reconcile romance with reality, passion with pragmatism? Why do we project so much of ourselves onto those we love? When does holding onto love require that we let it go?

I enjoyed this novel. It was interesting to hear about the medical world from the inside. Even if that means realizing that some decisions really are bigger than any education or experience someone might have in the field. I suspect that was one of the main goals of the author (though I don't want to put words into anyone's mouth). When push comes to shove, and the stakes couldn't be higher, that's where you really have to find out what the motivation behind your decisions are (you can often surprise yourself). Aside from the more topical and controversial (gasp!) aspects of the story, there was the matter of the characters and their big and little moments. I liked the characters in this story. I liked the times they had together. I enjoyed their conversations, their highs, their lows, etc. They were fun to be around.

Looking back at it, I have to say that my favorite parts of the novel were the heightened medical moments. There are so many hospital shows on TV now (and have been for awhile), so it often feels like you've seen or heard it all. I was nervous going in to the novel, thinking to myself "will we ever stop pumping out medical dramas". Well, I was wrong to be so pessimistic. It's very different to read a hospital scene than to watch one on tv. Because when you read a character, you can't help but to put a little of your own thinking into them. The character becomes you and you become them (to a certain degree). So when a crises hits, it hits hard and it hits real. You're not really a passive observer, you feel it. Or anyway, I do. The medical scenes in this novel had just enough detail to make it feel real, but not so much as to lose you. I felt like I was part of the action. It was fun. I got into it.

I've thought of this novel a few times since reading it. It really sparked a few questions. I felt like I wanted to debate the main character at a couple of points (or at least interrogate him a little, just for fun). I recommend this book. It'll fire you up a little bit.

Grey Matters Dr Mark Foster 9781449956264 Books Reviews

This is a great quick read. As a non-medical person I was drawn into the challenges that are faced in medicine when making life and death decisions. It made me consider my own attitudes and beliefs about end of life decisions. I am going to get to work on my living will! Aside from the personal impact it is a fun story with an enjoyable pace.
Grey Matters is a well-written novel that encourages deep thinking about important and controversial medical issues.

On the surface, it is taut and engaging love story which vividly recalls the fun and delight of infatuation. The two main characters, Joe and Kaitlyn, share a dream which seems to forecast their futures. The dream has a foreboding undertone, which keeps the reader wondering what the future holds for this loving couple.

At a deeper level, Grey Matters probes issues of faith, love, and destiny. It delves into medical questions about death and withdrawal of supportive care. I found myself relating to Joe, a physician who is uncomfortable when he's not in control of a situation. He is scientific, but does not want to acknowledge experiences he doesn't understand. In short, he likes the world to be black and white.

I'm very impressed with Dr. Foster's writing, especially considering this is his first novel. He employs imagery and draws the reader into the story expertly. I know this is trite to say, but I couldn't put this book down. I found myself wondering what would happen next, and reading when I had other things I needed to do. I look forward to his next book!
When Mark Foster delves into ethical medical issues,in fact whenever he is discussing the medical world this novel soars. It brings to light strong ethical issues in a vivid and exciting fashion. But Foster needs to stay away from Romance. I found the development of the relationship between Dr. Joe and Kaitlyn to be cloying and immature. At one point Joe slugs an associate of his to defend Kaitlyn's honor and I was rolling my eyes. These are seasoned intelligent professionals, not seventh graders.

There is also a dream world that is developed that is a major portion of the novel, and that lacked a bit for me as well. Perhaps it was visited once or twice too often. This is just a case of where you go with it and accept it, or you pick it apart. I was in the latter group. I am reminded of the way that heaven was depicted in "The Lovely Bones". It weakened the novel for me, because I just couldn't accept the authors vision. I have avoided seeing the film because I don't want to lose respect for Peter Jackson for the same reason.

But Foster is a talented author. I was never bored when reading "Grey Matters". Others may not find the romance so sickly sweet, and will come away from reading "Grey Matters" feeling that I am as cynical about Joe and Kaitlyn's romance as Joe is about his profession.

That being said in the final act there were realistic issues that were handled expertly including a birth scene that was terrifically written. So the novel gets 5 stars when it delves in medical issues and 2 to 3 stars in the romance department. Overall worth a read. I look forward to Dr. Foster's next novel if it delves more into medical issues. If he gets all Nicholas Sparksy with his second effort, I'll pass .

This book was a well written story that kept me interested and engaged to the end. I would recommend it to all my friends.
So thought provoking. The author had something important to say, and he said it well. The imagery stays with you for a long time, and the insiders perspective on the medical world is fascinating. I LOVE the multiple layers of meaning in the title.
This is a wonderful book. I was riveted from page one. I still have tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my arms. The story is fascinating from a drama standpoint, with fully developed characters and a story that holds the reader's interest. But the real gift of this book is the telling of the real-life ethical dilemmas. This book should be required reading for all medical students.
