The Magic Apple Tree stands in the garden of Moon Cottage, in the small village of Barley. Susan Hill's book is an evocation of a year seen from that cottage, in which she and her family lived for thirteen years.

Here are the changing seasons, the sounds and smells and sights of the country, the weather and the wildlife, the growing of vegetables and the keeping of hens, the making of preserves and the establishing of a new garden in the overgrown orchard.

Here too are the people going about their everyday life in a small country community. There are the pleasures of Christmas and Easter and Harvest Festival, the village show and the summer fete, the spring fair and the Women's Institute meetings. There is life and death, pleasure and survival, heavy snow and blazing summer heat.

The Magic Apple Tree was first published in 1982 and has become a classic of English country writing and the favourite, much-loved bedside book of so many. This edition retains John Lawrence's evocative and true-to-life wood engravings, exactly as in the first edition.

The Magic Apple Tree eBook Susan Hill

I hate to garden, hate being out in the sun, and worms make me ill to look at. As I point out to people, "the Italian gene for gardening passed me right by." However, I love reading books (and magazines; half the fun of "Country Living UK" are the stories about people making a living on their smallholding) about people who live on small farms, especially when they speak eloquently of the beauty of the countryside, the nature of the beasts, and even the tough realities of rural living—apparently my early love for Gladys Taber buried itself into my brain.

Hill lives in a small Oxfordshire community, in a house called "Moon Cottage"—just the name sounds appealing!—and tells the story of one year living in view of the titular apple tree, a gnarled veteran of years of growth. It's a simple memoir of village life, cottage life, the foods they eat grown from their own garden, the wildlife just outside their pastures, the animals in their life, raising food, enduring the weather—or enjoying it, the neighbors, the village events, cozy nights by the fire and hard work in the fields and kitchen. The text is sprinkled liberally with recipes, and each seasonal section and then each chapter is illustrated by wonderfully old-fashioned woodcuts by John Lawrence.

While Hill's book won't set me outside to recreate her happy pleasures (for one thing, she's in a much better climate!), I can imagine I'm there page by page.

The Magic Apple Tree eBook Susan Hill Reviews

The book itself I love and wanted my own copy - unfortunately although the book was in very good condition it smelled too bad to keep.
I loved this book. Fantastic. I loved the long thoughts on food, creatures, gardens, people season by season. I loved the lyrical language that stayed down to earth. This book almost made me want to garden ... until I remembered that I don't like bugs, dirt, or being outside. I love the idea, though and we do hope to keep a small garden this summer.

I want to know the people she describes better. I want to know the Hon. Claire and Mr. Baker the gardener. I want to see more of Hill's husband and daughter. I'd like to see pictures of Moon Cottage and the town to see if it matches my imagination.

I saw some reviews that compared this with The Pilgrim at Tinker Creek which I struggled through last summer. In my opinion, this is what I wish Pilgrim had been. Beautiful language, living a life, approachable and painting wonderful word pictures ... on a clearly defined subject.

In many ways I wish I hadn't read this as quickly as I did, but it was hard to stop when I got started.

I hope to post some quotes in my Wordy Wednesday post tomorrow.
A cozy, beautifully-written description of Susan Hill's country year in her garden and village. I found myself relaxing and smiling with every page. A delightful surprise from an author of ghost stories and crime novels! Highly recommended.
Rather hard to keep my interest in what I am reading... and a slow read.
I loved this book so much that I also ordered the hardback in addition to the kindle version. This is one that is so rich in detail that I want one to sit and hold and read to daughter and my future grandchildren. Susan Hill has created a blue ribbon, golden trophy of a book!
Live vicariously in an English village through this book. Thoughtful and at times lyrical prose. Follow the seasons and enjoy rural Oxfordshire.
This was a very enjoyable trip through a year of Susan Hill's family life in an idyllic English village - the perfect winter read. Her writing style is somewhat different and it takes a few chapters to adjust, but once you get onto the rhythm of it you are carried away. It is a pleasant look at a way of life that some of us yearned for but, sadly, never managed to achieve. As John Lenon said, Life happens while you are making plans.
